Black
Dir. J Francis - 12mins - 2008Black is a film about fear.
The essence of fear rises from what is unknown and the film creates a sense of this by placing a
man in a completely void world. Everything around him is unknown and his psyche is exposed to the
influences of this environment.
-----------------------------
Fear can build from a single moment of irrational thought and has the potential to dictate and influence our actions beyond the reach of all other motivations.
The film was designed to illustrate the process of fear as it evolves from an initial impulse into an engulfing and controlling sensation.
As soon as the ability to fear is acknowledged, it grows uncontrollably in accordance with our perceived defences against it. Walking down a dark road at night, the urge to look over your shoulder is irresistible but satiating this desire will only lead to a greater feeling of unease.
Black develops the concept of fear to the greatest extreme, when fear itself surrounds the man and his response to it dictates his survival.
-----------------------------
It was shot in 3 days in a empty olympic sized swimming pool on greenscreen. Post production lasted for 2 months due to the large amount of shots for a short this length. Every shot had to be chroma-keyed and some shots were also rotoscoped.
